Do you find that some recipes are just too big for you? Well why not halve the recipe, it’s straightforward. Until it comes to eggs that is. Half an egg? How do halve an egg? It’s obvious when you stop to think about it.

Two methods
Two methods present themselves straight away volume and weight. Of the two weight is more accurate and consistent. Using volume introduces other complications, like air increasing the volume.
Half an egg by weight
The process is simple and you can be used for white, yoke or both. All you will need is a few basic items you will have in the kitchen. Scales that can be zeroed, two containers and something to whisk the egg such as a fork or whisk.
How to get half an egg
Equipment
- 1 scales
- 2 small containers
- 1 whisk or fork
Materials
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Place one container on the scales and set to zero
- Crack the egg into the container and get the weight of the contents
- Calculate half the contents of the container
- Remove the container from the scales
- Whisk the egg to incorporate the white and yoke. The aim is to ensure a consistent distribution between the two parts of the egg
- Place the second, empty, container on the scales and set to zero
- Tip the contents from the first container into the second container until you have the weight we calculated in step 3. The end result is we have half an egg in each container.
